Larry Poons, Born 1937 Tokyo, Japan. Playing Hammers
Born: 1937, Tokyo
Nationality: American
Movement: Op Art, Color Field, Lyrical Abstraction
Larry Poons first gained major recognition in the 1960s for his optical “dot” paintings, rhythmic compositions of floating circles set against vibrant fields of color. These early works aligned him loosely with Op Art, though his approach was always more painterly and intuitive.
In the 1970s, Poons radically shifted direction. He abandoned the controlled geometry of the dot paintings and moved toward poured, layered, and heavily textured abstractions. This pivot shocked critics at the time but ultimately reinforced his reputation as an artist committed to evolution rather than repetition.
Today, Poons is widely regarded as a key figure in postwar American abstraction.
